EAST FINISHES 3RD AT CONFERENCE MEET
The Scarlets traveled with the Hoover-North team, after a little debacle with busing, to the Ottumwa Beach for the CIML Metro Conference Meet, which was postponed to 1-21-19 due to weather. The team finished third overall with the majority of the junior varsity athletes swimming personal record times, and majority of the varsity swimmers maintaining their times heading into the upcoming District Meet. Kade Dolphin finished runner-up in the 200 Free and conference champion in the 500 Free. Alex Liu finished runner-up in the 50 Free and conference champion in the 100 Fly. The 400 Free Relay Team of Alex Liu, Alan Trevino, Andrew Lein, and Kade Dolphin also finished runner-up. The junior varsity swimmers all swam very well to end their season, and the varsity swimmers heading onto the District Meet all are on track to have a great District Meet!

The team traveled through the snow to Southeast Polk Saturday 1-12-19 for the SEP Invitational. The team mixed things up to get a final look at swimmers in certain races they had either not swam, and competed much in this season. Alex Liu broke the 50 second barrier in the 100 Free with a :49.66, putting him third all time in the Scarlet All-Time Top Five! Kade Dolphin also improved his time in the 200 Freestyle to 1:54.05, and also lowered his 50 Free time to a low :23 leading off the 200 Free Relay. Senior Spencer Ballard also had a great meet swimming the 50 and 100 Freestyle for the first time going a :26 in the 50 and 1:02 in the 100, which earned him Swimmer of the Meet honors.

The Scarlets hosted the 5th Annual Ken Gaeth Invitational on Saturday 1-5-18 and finished fourth overall. Alex Liu was meet champion in the 50 Free and also improved his Scarlet All-Time Top 5 time in the 100 Free to 50.17 with his lead off swim of the 400 Free Relay. Kade Dolphin, Andrew Lein, Alex Liu and Alan Trevino were also meet champions in the 200 Free Relay and runner-up in the 400 Free Relay. Swimmers of the Meet were Alex Liu and Isaiah Fisher.

The team stepped up dropping time in several events and winning the 200 Free, 50 Free, 100 Fly, 500 Free, 200 Free Relay and the 400 Free Relay. Varsity Swimmers of the Meet were Ethan Straight and Xander Wallace. JV Swimmers of the Meet were Austin Mallory and James Carolus. Final scores were East 92 - Ottumwa 76, and East 112 - Williamsburg 54.

EAST vs ROOSEVELT RECAP:
Thursday 12-13-18 the Scarlets took on the Riders of Roosevelt High School. Despite Roosevelt's team being almost twice the size of the East team, the Scarlets still won five out of 11 events. The Scarlets took first place in the 50 Free, 100 Fly, 500 Free, 200 Free Relay, and finished the meet off by swimming a season best time beating Roosevelt in the 400 Free Relay! The 200 Free Relay team of Andrew Lein, Alan Trevino, Alex Liu and Kade Dolphin swam a season best time of 1:36.84. The same team also finished the meet winning the final event with a season best time of 3:35.25 in the 400 Free Relay! Kade Dolphin had a great meet by swimming a personal record time of 5:20.67 in the 500 Free, which also improved his fifth place time on the Scarlet All-Time Top 5 Board! Kade also swam a season best of :23.22 split in the 200 Free Relay immediately after swimming the 500 Free! This performance earned Kade Varsity Swimmer of the Meet! Freshman Hank Hall had a great meet as well swimming personal record times in the 50 Free, 100 Free and 100 Back. Hanks performance at the meet earned him JV Swimmer of the Meet. The team takes a break now until their sprint scrimmage meet against Southeast Polk on December 29th, and their next dual meet in Ottumwa January 4th. |

SCARLETS FINISH 4TH AT GRINNELL INVITATIONAL....
The Scarlets traveled to Grinnell College to compete in the Grinnell Invite Saturday 12-8-18. This meet featured one of the state's top teams, Linn-Mar, along with several other previous state qualifiers from other teams. The Scarlet Medley Relay team of Andrew Lein, Kade Dolphin, Alex Liu and Ethan Straight finished 4th with a time of 1:50.56. The same four swimmers finished runner-up in the 200 Free Relay at the meet with a time of 1:37.77! Alex Liu was the meet champion in the 50 Free, and broke the 23 second barrier for the first time in the open 50 Free this season going :22.95. Liu also finished runner-up in the 100 Fly going :56.08. Alan Trevino also had a great meet leading off the B-200 Free Relay team in a time of :25.70, and also swam a :58.38 in the 100 Free, which were both personal record swims! Denny Donaldson also had personal times of 2:25.92 in the 200 Free, and 1:01.71 in the 100 Free! Spencer Ballard also had great swims in the 200 Free and 100 Breast swimming personal record times! SCARLETS STEP UP BIG TO BEAT GRINNELL & HOOVER-NORTH!
The team took on both Hoover-North and Grinnell-BGM on Thursday 12-6-18 at East. The Scarlets quickly went up in points against Hoover-North, but Grinnell led for the majority of the meet. However, after the second break, the team stepped up big finishing first and second in the 100 Back, and swept the 100 Breast going first, second and third! Xander Wallace really stepped in the 100 Back finishing second and a personal record time of 1:08.59. Andres Cruz-Castro also had a great meet swimming personal record times in the open 50 Free and his relay leg of the 50 Free. Xander's performance in the 200 Free and 100 Back earned him Varsity Swimmer of the Meet, and Andres earned JV Swimmer of the Meet. The Scarlets beat Hoover-North 124 - 35, and also earned a hard fought victory over Grinnell 88-82!

The East Men's Swim Team traveled to the Newton YMCA 12/4/18 to take on NCMP (Newton, Colfax-Mingo, Pella). This was the team's only trip to a meter pool this season, which means the pool is 27.3 yards instead of the normal 25 yard distance most high school measure out to. This means all times had to be converted to yards. Despite the extra yards, the team had some great improvements in their times with Alex Liu earning Varsity Swimmer of the Meet, and Zach Wallace earning JV Swimmer of the Meet. The team did fall to Newton 52-118, but looks to bounce back this Thursday against Hoover-North and Grinnell-BGM at East.

Nelson Sanchez swam season best times dropping seven seconds in his 100 Butterfly, dropped five seconds in his 100 Backstroke, which were both personal record times. Nelson also swam person record times in his Butterfly leg of the 200 Medley Relay, and in his 100 in the 400 Free Relay. Nelson was named Varsity Swimmer of the Meet for his performance at this meet. Nelson's younger brother, Alexis, also had personal record swims in the 50 and 100 Free events earning him JV Swimmer of the Meet.

The Scarlet Men's team started off their season with a double dual meet against Marshalltown and Oskaloosa. The Scarlets beat Oskaloosa 58 - 36, but fell to Marshalltown 27 - 67. Varsity Swimmer of the Meet was Andrew Lein who swam personal records in the 50 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke. JV Swimmer of the Meet was Donnie Carpenter who had personal records in the 50 and 500 Freestyle. The team travels to Dowling Catholic next Tuesday 11/27 to take on the Maroons, and then to Ames Thursday 11/27.

The East Men's Swim Team began there season two weeks ago on November 5th. The team is a little smaller this season with 27 members, but still has several members back from last year with the addition of some newcomers as well. The team held their Gatorade Intrasquad Meet Friday November 16th, and the meet was a success with a great turnout. Several swimmers swam decent times for the beginning of the season, there were over 50 fans in attendance and several new swimmers got to experience what a high school meet is like. The team would like to thank all of its fans for coming out to support the team and also thank them for the Gatorade and granola bars they donated to the team. The team starts off their season in a double dual against Marshalltown and Oskaloosa Tuesday November 20th at 5:30PM at the East Pool.
